IRONMAN SOUTH AFRICA

I think the past 3 months of my life and certainly my family has been a very very busy one, to say the least. Moving house sale, packing up the house, moving country UK-Cyprus, racing Dubai 70.3, Joel settling into new school, generating work leads, athletes coming out to train and also training full time for Ironman South Africa. Wow, almost all of the biggest stresses in life just in 3 months.

Since Dubai 70.3 i have had some issues with Gluet Medius and never really got back to running freely, not pain but more discomfort and restriction in running gait. I have been working on it and even to the extent of introducing run/walk system to training 9min running @4:45/km then 1min walking @8:00/km looking to cover 2km minimum every 10min. Not the easiest of training sessions when fellow athletes see you walking every now and then even in training. However this was working towards looking for 3:30hr at the worst for IMSA.

Training to IMSA was good and certainly in an environment that was very similar to Port Elizabeth, based out of Pafos Cyprus I was limited a little to pool access but always had the sea to transfer a session to. The biking was awesome along the coast road putting in the set reps and tempos and certainly pushing myself against some of the windy conditions in February March. Running was something that i have started to increase for the brick sessions and no longer than 2hrs due to the Guet issues.

IRONMAN SOUTH AFRICA

It was a long journey flying Cyprus-Gatwick-Heathrow-Jo Burg- Port Elizabeth, no hassles with luggage on all airlines and no bike weight allowance/breakages/delays issues on any of the flights. I travelled with fellow Pro athlete Oliver Simon and also I had arranged for us to stay at a family friend of ours 5km from Race HQ.  It was good to be able to travel with Oliver as it certainly helped to race week train together and also support each other on last minute race gips or briefs etc.  The training for race week was more for me to get climatised and certainly get my bearings on the course.  Climatising was difficult one as we went from being drench in african storms in 19 deg C on the Tuesday to the weather hotting up to race Day Sunday 35 deg C.

I had an issue with my Power Pedals failing on me and after a lot, five, of trips to the bike shop i gave in and was not able to race with power.  One very positive decision i made during the week was to purchase an aero road helmet , as my Sworks Maclaren has no vents on it.

RACE DAY

I lined up with 37 other Pro men, strong field but no out right winner was the favourite. The swim start was fast, but i certainly held my own (11th from the left in pic).  The waves were not big but there was a swell so once into my stroke it was as though you were swimming 40miles out to sea.  300m out to sea then left turn and a full 1600 down to bottom end of the course.  I managed to find feet for some of the out section but with the swell there was very little advantage to draft and difficulty sighting.  I knew I was starting to fatigue from the swell for the last 500m to T1 so just composed my self and stroke and pushed on.  Not a great swim 1:02 as i went 56min in Barcelona last year, however all the swim splits were 3-5min slower than normal.

T1- went smoothly and I road out of town ready to get it going and riding to Perceived effort & HR as power meter was broken.

Aero Road Helmet was a Race week purchase and definitely didn’t regret this as temperature rose through the day max reading on the course was 36deg C.  Also racing in my 2016 Zone3 Lava Speed Top  long sleeve –  Functional fabric with optimum temperature control.  It was perfect for this climate allowing me to squirt water on to the fabric if required to aid in cooling.

2 lap course 90km each, the road was really bad for most of the course and the bottom end of the course was the worst, sapping a lot out of you #parisroubaix .  I lost my rear bottle cage at 20km into the bike but managed to grab my bottles from it before it hit the floor, stuffed the bottle in my rear pockets on my Zone3 Top.  I made the turn at the end of the course 45km in 1:13hr and felt ok , on the return leg the wind was more a head wind so i just concentrated on holding a smooth cadence as best as i could.  Completing the 1st lap 90km in 2:30hr.  No dramas for the outbound 2nd loop turning in another 1:15hr, however on my return leg with about 30km to go I got stung on top of the quad- groin bound – by a bee.  Not that i am allergic or went into shock, but it certainly made me stop due to the adrenaline and 145km of racing in the body.  I was able to get some ice from the feed station to reduce the swelling.  However no dramas just lost about 3min, but i was starting to fade after that to T2 for the last 30km.  The heat was starting to get to me.

Once again not a great bike split 5:15hr, but was determined to get out on the run and implement the run/walk structure to get through the marathon with what training i had in my legs.

The famous phrase in any long distance event is “I was on for ……..”  and it is very difficult to avoid saying that.  However I had a plan that was working very well up to 17km and then the no matter what or who was cheering you on the side of the 4 lap run course with spectators bbq beer and loud voices cheering you on my run/walk became a walk walk walk run ……….  The heat was now well and truly on 1pm – 4pm.  I had a chance to see some of the other Pro men on the run and they certainly looked how I felt, but only the top 5 guys were running very well.  I was determined to finish and not let the only Ironman in Africa beat me.

This was my 2nd slowest marathon in an IM 4:18hr ,bringing me home in a 10:41hr – 1hr off what I was after.   29th Pro Man African Ironman Championships, South Africa.

New Season Ahead #SB2016

Over the next few months I will be making some announcements which will be effecting my 2016 Season for the better and certainly very exciting, I will be announcing News about Paradise Tri, Sponsors, Training, Tri Coach for me, 2016 Races and also most importantly my Family.

Going into my 2nd year training and racing as a Professional Athlete things have already started to be planned and mapped out.

Here are a few things I can confirm to date :-

COACH – I have recently signed on with a Tri Coach, a fellow Coach Educator of mine and someone that has already mentored me since Staffordshire 70.3 2015. VO2 Maximum Triathlon Coaching. #CP (Coach Paula) actually qualified me back in 2005 as a Tri Coach myself. So she certainly knows me a bit more than just as Simon Brierley. 3wks in and already shaking things up.  Just returned yesterday from a full day of assessment and profiling with CP.  Great to have been a full mot with CP and the use of FTP testing, Swim Video in the endless pool and also Run Conditioning on treadmill.  We are now straight into the first week of build phase as we work towards first big races of the season.

FAMILY – with all of this excitement building into 2016, we are also looking to relocate as a family (Nicola and our 2 boys) to Cyprus as soon as our UK House sells. An opportunity has come up for me in Cyprus with Triathlons and certainly a better location and climate to be training full time from.  I will also be looking to establish Paradise Triathlon Training within Cyprus as well as continue to coach athletes based world wide and opening up opportunity to facilitate professional coaching both on  location and remotely.  Please contact me simon@paradisetri.co.uk for further information.

IRONMAN BARCELONA

After a really tough 10days in the build up to Ironman Barcelona I managed to relax and go into race day with some confidence in my ability and fitness. The Pre 2wks training location at Almyra Hotel, Cyprus has produced some great figures and allowed me to get some quality training in for IM Barcelona.

1wk before I road out at the UEA Triathlon 10mile Time Trial producing a PB 22:30 , even though strava says 22:15
NEW*** FTP 326 from 310 , 26.9mph avg
Got 2nd by 6sec because of car stopping in front of me Kudos to Chris Potter.

So travelled out to Barcelona Thursday and rolled out for reccy ride on the IM course, put in a few efforts during this ride and unfortunately I got hit by a car who decided to pass so close to me and then stop immediately infront of me. Giving me no option but to take the full blow on my left forearm and breaking off the wing mirror. I managed to keep the bike upright and come to a stop. Bruising and stiffness. Along with this I managed to enter the sea on a reccy swim and got clipped by a wave that flipped me quite badly and twinged my back.

Race morning came round finally and was really keen to get going, i felt very relaxed but still aching.

SWIM – 55 Pro Men on the start line, great to be in the mix of a larger group and knowing that i could hold myself better in a bigger group I set off from the gun aiming to hang in for a long as possible. The swim down to the turn point was strong and quick as i settled in on the hip of a group of 6 of us 26:00min for the 1/2 way point (TrainingPeaks stats). On the return leg it became more difficult to sight the buoys and also the wind had changed so we had the swell right into us head on. I lost contact with the pack and soon picked up Phil Mosley. Glad to be out the swim exiting on 58min exactly.

T1 – very quick and fluent 2:30min , as was keen to get out on to the bike

Bike – New tyres and tubes (IM Bolton 3 x punctures), headed out onto the Fast, not Flat, boring, non scenic, 112 mile bike course = sub 5hr turbo session. But for most of the Age Groupers a Team Time Trial (although almost impossible not to draft in their defence, due to design of the course.

I was ready to ride a smooth and solid bike here, going out with a plan to hold 240watts avg. This soon became very easy to do so subject to the course and also i soon settled in with a group of 5 as we set out to legally utilise the 12m draft zone rule and proceeded to set a very good pace. Well at least most of us in the group paced up front and did their bit, after a bit of a vocal encouragement. In the last 10 miles i started to get a very hot head and needing to stop and cool my head at the feed station. Still riding with Phil Mosley he passed me and asked if I was ok, I let him ride away whilst cooling my head. Managed to cool down and pick up the chasing group which contained Yvonne Van Vlerken, dually accused of my judgement of 12m after she had sat quite close to my own rear wheel for 5km before. Coming into T2 feeling reading to go into the marathon.

39km 1:00:19 38.80km/h
36km 56:18 38.37km/h
36km 56:19 38.35km/h
36km 55:26 38.97km/h
30km 53:00 33.96km/h
3km 6:47 26.54km/h

Total bike split 4:48:09hr 233 watts avg

Run – Certainly felt i got going into the run here a lot stronger and even made a conscious decision to hold back on the first lap. Spotting and hearing people in the crowed that i knew mad me fly through the finish line loop every time, but the top end of the course was lonely and tough going. Not the best run and was hoping to go certainly quicker than IMBolton, but when Phil saw me again on the run course I think I did well to keep going and certainly finish, I was looking quite pale and not good. On the last 5km I knew I was going to be very close to 10hr mark and this was certainly achievable when I was doing the maths, but the physical out put was not securing it. Until last 800m I realised I had 3 min to go sub 10, thank goodness it was not 800m as almost didn’t have time to grab Seychelles Flag in the home straight to finish 28sec to spare.

Setting a new PB for me of 9:59:32 hr , even though i am most definitely not content with my run split as I went 22min quicker on a harder course at IMUK.

This has left me with a lot of thinking and most definitely left me really hungry for the next Ironman. My season is not over yet for racing, but it certainly has got me thinking towards 2016 and hopefully my 2nd year of racing as a Professional athlete. There is going to be some big announcements in the next few months and certainly with respect to my training and racing. However for the next 7-10days I am resting and then a week of back into training and then off to 70.3 Turkey travelling with Paradise Tri Coached athlete Hannah MacInroy Naylor.

This weekend I will be spending with my 2 boys and fellow club athletes fixed around the pc streaming IRONMAN Kona World Triathlon Champs as Joe Skipper (local training partner) will be stepping up to play with the big boys and SMASH IT!!

DUBLIN 70.3

That was tough I really put everything into that, shame the swim was over 300m longer- not good Organisers.
Swim – 2,300m (1,900m) swell not too bad but on my own again. Composed and slow 35min but leaders 28min
Bike – had a plan and road it to power higher on way out as wanted to recover a little on the way back but not possible.

Starva Bike Data

Absolutely stoked with a bike split of 2:19hr 24mph avg 270 Watts and was able to ride upto 8th Pro. Got out of T2 onto the run – Wouch!! that was tough on the legs nothing there on the 3rd final lap everything empty blew 3miles to go so so tough.
Finished 4:38:09 10th Pro

Really pleased !!! Left everything out there not just on the bike
